Checklist
Bookings, fuel, passes, kit

BOOKED 1

All eight nights confirmed
BOOKED

Stanley Village Waterfront (4th), The Crays Strahan (5th and 6th), Pedder Wilderness Lodge (7th), The Islington Hobart (8th and 9th), 105 Cambria Drive Dolphin Sands (10th), and 73-75 St John Street Launceston (11th).

ACTION 5

Book the Barnbougle tee time
ACTION

The last thing outstanding. Aim for about 13:30 on Wed 11 Nov. Walking only unless you hold a medical certificate, so allow 4.5 hrs, and caddies must be pre-booked.

Book Wednesday dinner in Launceston
ACTION

You arrive about 19:45 with no signal across the passes beforehand. Stillwater needs booking; Black Cow and Geronimo are easier.

Book the Gordon River cruise
ACTION

Departs Strahan Wharf 9:00 daily, back 15:00, six hours. Check in 8:30 at 18 Esplanade, boarding 30 min before. Lunch of Tasmanian produce included, licensed bar on board. Book Fri 6 Nov, and book it before your accommodation.

Book Port Arthur
ACTION

Mon 9 Nov. The standard ticket covers the site, the 20-min harbour cruise and Isle of the Dead entry, and stays valid two consecutive days. Buy online for the entry time you want.

Confirm the arrival sailing
ACTION

Day 1 assumes you land at Devonport early on Wed 4 Nov. A day sailing arrives about 18:30 and removes Day 1 - drive straight to Stanley if so.

Changed 4

Two nights in Strahan
Changed

5 and 6 November. Day 3 is now a cruise day with almost no driving, which is the only rest day on the itinerary and lands in the right place - after two long ones.

Port Arthur and Cape Hauy on the same day
Changed

Previously you had to choose. Now both are in, at the cost of a 7:00 start. Waterfall Bay is the 1.5 hr swap if you would rather take the site slowly.

The Huon and Hartz day is gone
Changed

It was the only day that could go. You lose Hartz Peak, the Channel road and Cygnet. Days 5 and 6 are still Hobart-based, so you keep three nights in one bed.

Launceston is a bed, not a stop
Changed

Cataract Gorge, the automobile museum and the QVMAG are off the itinerary. Blue Tier is promoted to Day 8's main walk to compensate, and the Sideling can be driven at your own pace.

Ferry 1

Return check-in, Thu 12 Nov
Ferry

Unchanged. Typically 1-2 hrs before departure, and Day 9 is built backwards from it.

Passes 1

Holiday Vehicle Parks Pass
Passes

Covers up to 8 weeks, one price per vehicle, roughly $90-100 - confirm the current rate. You enter national parks on at least six of the nine days. Note Port Arthur is a separate ticket.

Booking 6

Strahan, 5 and 6 Nov
Booking

Two nights now. Smaller than it looks, and the cruise crowd fills it. Book both together.

New Norfolk, 7 Nov
Booking

The replacement for Mt Field, where there is effectively nothing.

The Agrarian Kitchen, 7 Nov
Booking

Saturday works - it closes Tue and Wed. Set menu about $220pp, three hours, reservations open four months ahead.

Hobart, 8-10 Nov, three nights
Booking

Fine at short notice, and three nights in one bed is worth a lot on a trip like this.

Coles Bay or Bicheno, 11 Nov
Booking

Sells out for early November. Book.

Launceston, 12 Nov
Booking

Fine at short notice, and you only need a bed and a dinner.

Fuel 3

Before the Murchison Highway
Fuel

Fill at Somerset or Burnie, Day 2.

Before the Lyell Highway
Fuel

Fill at Queenstown, Day 4. Assume Derwent Bridge may be shut.

Before the Central Plateau
Fuel

Fill at Launceston or Poatina, Day 9. Nothing on top.

Roads 4

Gravel on the route
Roads

About 98 km across five days, none of it over 16 km in one run: Lake Dobson 16 km, Fortescue Bay 12 km, Poimena 7 km, Cape Tourville 5.5 km, Gulf Rd about 5 km, plus the Friendly Beaches spur.

Still out at 20 km
Roads

Wielangta Rd 25 km, Scotts Peak Rd 30 km and the Western Explorer 75 km all fail on length. Jacobs Ladder fails on condition - steep unguarded switchbacks on loose surface, with likely snow in early November.

Check before you turn off
Roads

Lake Dobson Rd climbs to about 1,000 m and can ice up or close. Look at the Parks alerts page on the morning of Day 4.

After heavy rain
Roads

Fortescue Bay Rd gets noticeably rougher. Crescent Bay and Mount Brown is the sealed swap, and it starts near Remarkable Cave so it pairs with Port Arthur even better.

Safety 2

Wildlife is the real hazard
Safety

Not the roads. Tasmania has Australia's highest roadkill rate and the car sits 30 cm off the ground. Plan to be parked by nightfall - the exceptions are the Stanley penguins, the Strahan shearwaters and getting home from Port Arthur, so take those slowly.

Alpine weather
Safety

Cradle, Mt Field and the Central Plateau can all snow in November. Windproof, warm layer, hat and gloves regardless of the sea-level forecast.

Kit 5

Walking gear
Kit

Boots or grippy trail shoes - essential for Mt Amos and the 1,800 steps of Cape Hauy - rain shell, warm layer, 2 L water, snacks, headtorch.

For the cruise
Kit

It runs in all weather on an open-topped deck. Windproof layer, and motion sickness tablets before boarding if Hells Gates worries you - the harbour itself is sheltered.

Red torch for the wildlife
Kit

Penguins at Godfreys Beach on Day 1 and shearwaters at Ocean Beach on Day 3. White light scares both off the beach.

Offline maps and this road book
Kit

No signal on the west coast, Gordon River Road or the Central Plateau. The map links need a connection; the pages do not.

Cash
Kit

Small west coast, highland, Stanley and oyster-shack operators are often cash-only.

Context 2

Daylight
Context

Roughly 05:45 to 20:15 with daylight saving. A 4-hr walk plus Port Arthur fits in one day - just.

Markets
Context

Salamanca is Saturday and you will be crossing the Lyell. Farm Gate is Sunday morning and you will be heading for Strathgordon. You miss both.
